When many people think about New Orleans, they immediately picture festivals, music, and nightlife. But one thing I’ve always loved about this city is that there’s also a completely different side to it that families and kids enjoy just as much.

From riding the historic St. Charles streetcar beneath the oak trees to spending the afternoon at Audubon Zoo or City Park, there are so many ways families can spend a fun weekend together around Uptown New Orleans and Mid-City.

And honestly, some of the best memories here are often the simple ones. 

⚜️ RIDING THE ST. CHARLES STREETCAR ⚜️

For many kids, riding the St. Charles streetcar feels like an adventure all by itself.

There’s just something special about hearing the bell ring while rolling beneath the massive oak trees that line St. Charles Avenue. Families can hop on and off while exploring Uptown, and it’s a fun way to experience New Orleans from a completely different perspective.

Parents usually enjoy it just as much because the ride itself feels relaxing and nostalgic compared to the fast pace of everyday life.

And honestly, it’s also one of the more affordable family activities in the city.

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) currently offers:

• single rides for around $1.25
• 1-day Jazzy Passes for about $3
• and multi-day passes for visitors spending the weekend in town

Streetcars, buses, and even the Algiers ferry are all part of the RTA system, which makes getting around the city much easier for families wanting to explore different areas without constantly driving and parking.

Many visitors also find the Le Pass mobile app helpful for purchasing tickets and planning routes throughout the city.

And if you time it right, stopping for a snoball or sweet treat afterward makes the experience even better. 😂⚜️

⚜️ AUDUBON ZOO & AUDUBON PARK ⚜️

Audubon Zoo has been a favorite for generations of New Orleans families, and it’s still one of the best places to spend a day with kids.

One thing many locals will tell you is:

👉 Going early in the morning is usually the best experience, especially during the hot New Orleans summer months.

👉 Bring a smaller cooler with waters to keep hydrated 

Not only is the weather much more comfortable earlier in the day, but many of the animals also tend to be more active before the afternoon heat settles in.

Some of the must-see exhibits families love include:

• The famous white alligator inside the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit
• Louisiana black bears
• Jaguar Jungle
• The nocturnal exhibit, where kids can see bats and other nighttime creatures in a completely different environment

Even though the nocturnal exhibit is smaller, it’s honestly one of the cooler hidden parts of the zoo that many visitors remember afterward.

And of course, while exploring the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit, parents may want to remind the kids to keep an eye out for the legendary Rougarou. 😂⚜️

The Rougarou is part of old Louisiana folklore dating back generations and is often described as a swamp creature with the body of a human and the head of a wolf or dog. The legend traces back to French settlers who brought stories of the “loup-garou” to South Louisiana centuries ago.

Thankfully, most zoo visitors survive the encounter. 😉

During the summer, Audubon Zoo also offers additional family fun with their Cool Zoo water area, where families can enjoy:

• splash areas
• and private cabanas for cooling off during the Louisiana heat

It’s become one of the most popular summer attractions for local families.

And right nearby, Audubon Park gives families even more space to enjoy the outdoors. The walking paths, playgrounds, ducks, and large open green spaces make it perfect for picnics, bike rides, or simply letting kids run around and burn off some energy.

And during the warmer Louisiana months, those shaded oak trees become everyone’s best friend. 😂⚜️

Covering more than 1,300 acres in the heart of New Orleans, City Park has become one of the most loved places for families to spend the day together.

Between the massive oak trees, walking paths, outdoor attractions, and family activities, there’s honestly something for every age group.

Families can spend the day exploring:

• Storyland
• Carousel Gardens
• paddle boats on Big Lake
• playgrounds
• walking trails
• miniature golf at City Putt
• and even the beautiful sculpture garden near the New Orleans Museum of Art

For younger children, Storyland feels especially magical with the larger-than-life fairytale displays where kids can climb through pirate ships, castles, and storybook scenes.

Carousel Gardens has also remained a New Orleans tradition for generations, and many adults who grew up visiting now bring their own children back to experience it.

For families who enjoy arts and culture, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden are beautiful places to walk and explore. The sculpture garden is especially unique because the artwork is surrounded by lagoons, ancient oak trees, and landscaped walking paths that make it feel peaceful even in the middle of the city.

And honestly, one of the best parts of City Park is that you can make the day as simple or as full as you want. Some families spend hours at the attractions, while others simply enjoy walking beneath the oak trees with beignets and coffee from Café du Monde nearby.

The park also has beautiful tennis courts that many locals grew up visiting. One of my favorite childhood memories was going there on school field trips and playing tennis with the nuns from St. Stephen's while they were still wearing their full habits out on the courts. 😂⚜️

That’s part of what makes New Orleans special. Even the small memories somehow end up feeling unforgettable years later.

And during the holidays, the park becomes even more magical with Celebration in the Oaks and the train garden displays that many New Orleans families have grown up visiting year after year.

⚜️ SWEET TREATS MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER ⚜️ 

One thing New Orleans families know very well is that food somehow always becomes part of the adventure.

Whether it’s:

• Warm beignets
• Colorful snowballs......strawberry is my favorite
• Ice cream
• Or stopping somewhere local after a long day outdoors, like the Rum House on Magazine Street, where trying their Damn Good Nachos is a must.

Those little moments are usually the ones kids remember most.

And honestly, there’s something about powdered sugar covering everyone’s clothes after beignets that somehow feels like part of the authentic New Orleans experience. 😂⚜️
